Canon PowerShot G9 12.1MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Canon PowerShot G9 12.1MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

No Professional Photographers Here...

I purchased my G9 In March. I wanted a D10, however have a 2 year old and figured this smaller camera would be more practical when we are out and about...and boy, was I right! This camera is amazing! I am definitely NOT a professional photographer, however get professional looking pictures every shot. There are so many features! I especially love the Aquarium setting! Have you ever taken a picture at the aquarium? Normally you can see the flash on the glass and the fish are discolored..well, not anymore!! The images come out crystal clear, as if you are standing in front of the tanks!

LCD cover cracked within 2 months and Canon refused warranty repair

Until Canon can improve the design of this model to improve the cover over the LCD display from than the current flimsy piece of plastic, do NOT get a powershot G9. I owned mine for 2 months before the cover over the LCD display cracked. This after I owned my last camera - an Olympus Infinity Zoom - for 5 years without any problem. The only reason I'm replacing it is because of the better technologies available. Another reason not to buy this model - Canon's customer service and warranty dept are awful. We are a small non-profit and they not only refused to fix our camera under warranty - trying to charge us $160 to replace a cracked piece of plastic - but they were VERY rude in the process. Goodbye Canon. Never another camera from this horrible company.

Obsolete item

Since the new G10 does everything this camera does plus a bit more why on Earth would anyone buy a G9 for 150 dollars more?

Great camera - don't buy it

The Canon G9 is a great camera with terrific features - it is just so unreliable you shouldn't buy it. I have been told that I now need to send the camera back for the 2nd time to get it repaired. Since I now have owned the camera for a year they say it may cost up to $380. I bought the camera to take pictures on trips, the latest problem though occured just in the middle of shooting at home. Not sure I want to even keep the camera even if I get it fixed (and I just bought a dive case for it that I haven't used it yet) because if you can't trust your camera it doesn't matter how many features it has.

Canon G9

Better images than the new G10 (I have both). I do like the G10s wider angle lens however. Both this and the G10 are great high end point and shoots. Best uses are landscapes and subjects that are still. If you want to shoot action, buy a DSLR. Built like a tank and fits perfectly into the "take it everywhere" class.

quick delivery

This was exactly what I was looking for: a complete camera kit. It arrived quickly and included everything advertised. The price was lower than what local camera shops offered. I would do business with this company again without hesitation.

Excelent Camera

I am glad I bought these camera. Great SLR camera. I know there are better cameras, but these one works perfectly to me. It's fast, not heavy. Really easy way to manage all the features, changing the picture modes, etc...

Canon PowerShot A540 6MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom

Canon PowerShot A540 6MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom

Great Vacation Camera

Have had this one for a year. It's a little tricky getting used to the function options, but once you set them, it takes great pictures. Not as prone to catching "orbs" or dust as much as my Daughter's Casio. Images are sharp but "red eye" still a problem with some night shoots. (you can correct on your computer before uploading to shutterfly or other photo services). Lag time between shots is quick, a lot better than my old Nikon Coolpix. This one really shines in outdoor lighting coloration and depth. While I prefer a full sized SLR digital, this is the next best thing when you travel light.

Amazing camera

I'm not a professional photographer... I'm a person who likes to take pictures of almost everything I see :). Most of the time I have my camera with me, and I like just to point-and-shoot in order to take pictures, without any complicated setups. I have this camera for about two years now and I can recommend it highly, and here are the reasons why: - With camera, I bought rechargeable batteries with a charger... Batteries are Nickel-Metal Hydride; 1.2V 2000mAh. I can take about 500 pictures with two batteries (without a flash; with flash it take less pictures). Camera takes two AA batteries, and I have 4 of them, so I always have backup in case I need one... but since they are only AA batteries, even if backup goes off - I just go to any store and buy some more. - With this camera, I bought 1Gb of memory which is quite a lot of storage space, but since I'm taking a lot of pictures and videos, I have one more 1Gb memory (as a backup). It's very easy to replace memory card - almost the same as replacing batteries. - Picture quality is very good. I take pictures from a moving car (my husband is driving), and the pictures are very sharp. I was taking pictures during rain, and on the pictures I can see rain drops! Also, there are no red eyes. - Video quality is amazing! The microphone (located: small holes above lense, oposite from flash) picks up sound really great. When I play the video on my PC, video and sound quality are really amazing - considering that this is "only" Canon PowerShot Digital Camera... - Size is great. Not very small so it's not easy to missplace it, and not big - easy to put in my bag or a jacket pocket. It's also not heavy, so it's easy to carry it around. - Canon PowerShote A540 is a "point-and-shoot" camera. In order to take picture, you need to press "On" button, to point and press button to take picture... it's that simple, and quite fast. It slows down (you need to wait sometimes few seconds between pressing button to take picture and actually taking the picture) when batteries are low; I also noticed delay sometimes when Flash="Auto" and when light is not so bright, so I a have feeling that camera 'is thinking' if the flash should go off or not. - I like that it has 4x zoom, however, when I use zoom, my hand needs to be really-really still in order to get a clear picture - slightest movement will make picture fuzzy. One con from my side is that display is not protected... after two years in my pockets/purse, I can see light scratches on the display. This camera has many modes/options... buy honestly, for my picture taking needs, I'm not even using them - I tried them out, but for every day use, I use modes: "Auto" (for pictures) and "Video" (for video)... and that's about it. Overall, when I look at my previous 2 yrs experience, price, and all features provided, I must say that this is a great camera and I would recommend it to everyone who wants good quality photos with only Point-And-Shoot.

Great Quality

I've been using this camera for close to 2 years now and have been impressed with it's durability and image quality. I find it is not the best in low lighting situations but over all this camera has helped me capture some awesome images. I will be hanging on to it even though I'm upgrading to and SLR soon - a good point and shoot is invaluable.

Great scenic shots for a painter

I have had the Canon Powershot A540 for about 2 years. I upgraded from a Nikon 3200 series. I am always on the lookout for things I can turn into a painting. This camera has served me well. I can take a picture through the front windshield while moving and get a great shot. I do however find that to view the pictures taken you have to move the mode switch down to do a review. If you forget to put it back in camera position nothing happens. I like the factor that it allows me so many different shooting modes. It has portrait, landscape (although I've never used it when filming landscape),night snapshots, kids & pets, indoor, foliage, snow, beach, fireworks and underwater. You can change the shooting mode using the button on top of the camera. Can't get any easier than that. Normally I've not had to change my setting to shoot a picture of an amazing color sky. It's response is quick, red eye is reduced but not totally eliminated as I have found out in some shots I've taken. It is lightweight and small enough that it fits in a small cosmetic case in my purse. Uses 2 AA batteries. I use the photo batteries and for me they last a long time. I've been amazed at how long they last. For me downloading is very convenient. I remove the SD memory card and put it in my computer. Then I can go in and crop, stitch, and do whatever I feel has to be done to make the picture better. The zoom is great, brings what I want closer without losing any detail. In normal setting, I've taken indoor pictures of the grandchildren and my husband and they are perfect. Color is very good. The one thing I would really like to have on this camera is image stabilization. Looking now to getting either the new Kodak Zi6 pocket camcorder or the RCA small wonder EZ201 so I can capture pix of my great grandchildren doing their thing.

good quality, slightly overpriced

good quality, everything it said it would be, etc. but i went to staples the day after it arrived, and newer model was 20 dollars less. so i think it was overpriced.

Canon Powershot A2000IS 10MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Canon Powershot A2000IS 10MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

excellent camera in this price range/category

easy to use, takes great pictures, in this price range/category you can't do any better..i did a lot of research. I initially did not like the AA battery power source, but like very much now that I found good hybrid rechargeable batteries, though the shutter does lag moreso with this power source. The zoom on this camera is awesome. the 3 inch view screen is nice in size, but very hard to see in the sun..even with setting on brightest setting and the resolution is just ok. solid build quality, a little bigger than most cameras in this price range and does not fit in the hand that easy. Besides these few minor gripes, i highly recommend this camera to anyone looking for a quality point and shoot with a good zoom and 10 megapixels.

My disappointment is so high

I am very sorry I bought the new Canon A2000 camera. I will be giving the camera to my nephew, since my disappointment is so high. I cannot express my frustration level at the amount of time it takes for the flash to recharge and at Canon for even bothering to release such an inferior "A" series replacement. I implore upon Canon to go back to the drawing board on this one. I read all of the reviews on Amazon and I have to respond directly to that one review where the reviewer foolishly tries to justify his positive review based on the review of a camera-review Website. One other reviewer responded in the comments section to said review, but his or her reply won't be seen in the general review section, so I will paste in what he or she said here. (These are excerpts from a professional camera reviewer.) "The A2000 is a bit of a new departure for the A-series. Previous models in the range have been popular with hobbyists and more experienced photographers, thanks to their robust construction, excellent handling, limited but useful range of manual exposure controls and optical viewfinders. The A2000 has none of these things, and appears to be aimed at less ambitious photographers looking not for manual versatility but for a simple, easy-to-use general-purpose compact. If this represents a new direction for the A-series then there will be some disappointed customers. "The body is made of plastic, and although the camera does feel solidly weighty, the body panels seem to be thinner than previous A-series cameras and creak alarmingly when squeezed. There's nothing really wrong with it, but it does feel more cheaply made than some previous models in the range. "The A2000 has no optical viewfinder, but it does have an enormous three-inch LCD monitor. However this too is not up to the high standard of previous A-series models. It has an extremely narrow viewing angle of only about 30-odd degrees vertically, making it difficult to use for over-the-head shots, and it is also highly reflective. It's the first Canon monitor in a long time that I've actually had difficulty using outdoors. "Main shooting mode is controlled via a large dial on the camera's top panel. The dial itself feels a bit cheap and clunky, with distinct air of Fisher Price about it. "The menu on the A2000 appears to be similar to some of the recent IXUS range, with fewer options than usual for an A-series camera. "The external controls don't appear to be as solidly mounted as they might be, and some feel decidedly flimsy. Catch one with the edge of a fingernail and it gives an distinctly plastic `ping'. "The zoom control is a rotary bezel around the shutter button. The control action is fairly crude; you have to turn the ring a long way to make it move, and when it does it moves jerkily and too quickly, making accurate framing difficult. Since the 6x zoom range is a major selling point of the camera I would have hoped that Canon might do a better job on the zoom control. "Low light focusing is not as reliable as some other recent cameras. "Verdict The Canon PowerShot A2000 IS is a little expensive for a mid-level compact, and the overall build quality and low-angle monitor may cause some disappointment. The lack of the usual A-series manual exposure options and optical viewfinder may also put off some potential buyers. "Yes, the review listed many positives, but with so many negatives, you can clearly see why many people would give this camera some low star ratings. Also, the low star reviews are a reflection of the huge disappointment with Canon regarding their latest A model. They could have and should have done better. They are charging $250, and it is 2008, and the flash recharge time is unacceptable. Also, when considering reviews, you have to take into consideration that one might be trying to help people decide if there are better cameras if one doesn't really care about the AA battery issue. "I think the A2000 deserves the majority of low star ratings it has on Amazon as of today. Thank you." I agree with the above negatives and opinion. And I would concur that the A2000 deserves a lower star rating because the scale is different with this camera. The rating is on this latest "A" series replacement camera from Canon; a camera line that takes AA batteries.

Not up to par

I thought this 10 meg camera would blow my old Casio 5 meg out of the water! Wrong.... The zoom was nice but everything else is sub par. I returned it and purchased another cheap Casio with 8 meg. The doulble A batteries are nice except they take a full 4-5 seconds to recharge the flash. I am not a huge camera guy by any means. I keep a small easy to use camera. Pictures taken with my old Casio looked better than with this new Canon. And yes I had it on the high resolution. Save your money and buy a cheap little Casio for a great general purpose camera.

This Canon is a Dud

I've been shooting with Canon digital cameras for years, even though their lenses tend to get stuck after a while. So I invested in this one as soon as it came out. Big mistake: When the flash is on, it takes more than 5 seconds to shoot pictures in sequence. So if you're trying to take animal pictures, or even pictures of kids, the moment will be lost. I do give the camera 2 stars for the nice big screen and the on-screen display that lets you know what mode you're in. Also, I highly recommend dealing with 17th Street Photo through Amazon (or, if you're in NYC, in person). The guys are great to deal with.

Right for the price

I think this camera deserves four stars. I have used at least 10 digital cameras in the past 10 years, not counting the SLRs. At this price, $249, I think what this camera offers is as good as you can get from a pocket camera. There are some pros and cons but the pros far outweigh the cons. I like the A2000's solid feel and weight, unlike the flimsy feel of the most other recent A series, such as my A570is. The pictures are as good as, if not better than, any pocket camera at this price. There are complaints about noise, but again find me better pictures from the same class of cameras. The features, however, are what please me. I am not going to repeat them since it's on the product description, but the use of AA batteries and 6x zoom are must haves for me. For better pictures quality, I use my SLR, but for pocket convenience, I'll just enjoy this for the time being, until the technology catches up with our unquenchable taste. -----Added------ After using it for a while, I couldn't understand how anyone would rate this camera lower than 3 stars without good reasons. Try http://www.trustedreviews.com/digital-cameras/review/2008/09/19/Canon-PowerShot-A2000-IS for a fair review.

Canon Powershot SD990IS 14.7MP Digital Camera with 3.7x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

Canon Powershot SD990IS 14.7MP Digital Camera with 3.7x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

I guess I was expecting a little more...

I upgraded from SD-450 to this camera. I guess my expectations were high. So, far my photos are good but not better than the 450 as far as the clarity. My biggest issue with this camera is that my photos are soft (not sharp) indoors. In good lighting, they are amazing. Also, I wish the LCD viewer was a larger. With that said, I love the face recognition with the zoom feature and "quick shot" feature that makes this camera work similar to an SLR. The video is very clear. I have only used the camera about 8 times so I will update this review upon further examination.

Awesome camera

I got this camera as a carry-around-on-an-everyday-basis camera - got a little tired of dragging my Canon 20D around. This camera is very nicely built, feels very solid and sturdy. The button layout is very easy to use and very fast to maneuver. The learning curve is also quite short, as most things on the camera just makes sense. The technical quality of the camera, leaves little to be desired. It takes amazing photos, of course with all the limitations such a small camera has. The zoom is nice and fast and focusing is most times spot on. Only thing I wish was better, was low light capability, but then again, no camera with a sensor and lens this small will do much better. I can highly recommend this camera as an everyday use camera, due to it's light weight, small size and outstanding quality. A general precaution to every photographer: always bring extra memory cards and batteries - you will end up snapping away..

Way Fast

After hours and hours and hours of surfing reviews, I finally chose this camera since I like the clarity of Canon cameras. I bought a SanDisk Ultra II SDHC 4GB card to go with it after reading reviews which claimed a 4GB is faster than 2GB and SanDisk is a great brand. This camera is so fast. From shot to shot, it is fast, compared with my older Canon. There is also a function where you can press the camera button and it will continuously shoot photos and that is supposed to be even faster. Clear and fast. That's what I need.

LOVE THIS!

I love this camera. I own Nikon DX40 and of course it's nothing compare to that but this is a GOOD camera. I love the fact that I can take as good pictures as my SLR. I love how clear it can be at night. I went to disneyland and was able to capture good pictures of the Fantasmic show with NO FLASH. Although this camera has a lot of functions that I have to learn but I believe when you know how to do it, you will get a good pictures. Great for close up picture. The design is pretty slick. I just love carrying this every where I go..

reccommended! Perfect point and shoot!

I love this camera. It is perfect for me. I wanted a point and shoot that produced quality pictures and it is almost perfect. Size is perfect, very easy to use, even changing settings. I am married to a professional photographer and he is even impressed with the quality. We took it hiking during peak leaf season of NC and the images are very impressive. It is a little slow to respond when shooting so action shots are difficult but I've had the opportunity to experiment with different settings for the same image and it makes post production quick and easy. Even the lights on a very large outdoor christmas tree is lifelike! I have not had the opportunity for fireworks yet so no comment there. For a point and shoot, easy to use with quality images it is perfect. I recommend!

Canon PowerShot SX100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

Canon PowerShot SX100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

Just what Santa ordered!

I bought this for my best friend for Christmas and he loves it! He picked it out and it was exactly what he wanted in a camera. He's an amateur photographer and was looking for a camera to replace his old one. This one was perfect!

The Canon digital camera review

It arrived in perfect condition and was just as the sender said it would be. I rate this transaction and product very highly...outstanding... Thanks :-))))))))))))

Great Customer Service from Canon

Canon PowerShot SX100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver) I previously owned a Canon Powershot S3 and loved it, however it was a bit too big and I wanted more mega pixels so I upgraded to a Powershot SX100. The camera is great and fairly easy to use. The optics in the zoom however are not quite as good as the S3. Pictures seem a bit fuzzy when zoomed in, especially in low light conditions. Also, it's not easy to shot good pictures at night or in the dark. I had better success with the S3 at adjusting the exposure settings to shot clear and well balanced pictures at night. What I really like about the SX100 is the variety of shooting modes. The fireworks mode works fairly well. The aquarium mode is awesome and the foliage mode produces very vibrant pictures of vegetation. The face detection features also works very well. The best thing about Canon cameras are their reliability. Several weeks ago I placed the camera on top of my car and drove off, forgetting about the camera on the roof. When I got the speed of the car up to 50 mph the camera finally fell off and hit the pavement. When I retrieved the camera from the street it was scratched and dented in several places, however amazingly it still worked. I sent the camera back to Canon to have them check it out to make sure that everything was ok with it. Since it was within the one-year warranty period, they replaced the body on the camera and adjusted the optics FREE OF CHARGE. When I got the camera back from Canon it looked like a new camera. I am very pleased and happy with the service received from Canon. I plan to buy a new Canon Powershot SX10 and will keep the SX100 for family photos. Attention - see my hot air balloon photos taken with this camera after it was returned from Canon.

Great Camera

This is a great point and shoot camera with that extra zoom that makes it more versatile than most point and shoots. Cannon products have been pretty reliable for me so far.

Price Warning

I bought this camera in January and am very happy with it. I wasn't into photography before but I had to take a still photo class and this was perfect for what I needed. I don't think it's professional quality but it is definitely a step up from any point-and-shoot I've ever used before. I do agree with other reviews that state it has a lot of "noise" at high ISOs but it's still better compared to what I've seen on my older Fuji and Samsung digital cameras. HOWEVER, I bought this from Amazon in January for $225. I have no idea why it is now almost $700! This is not worth that much money. Please check your prices before you decide to buy this camera! You could probably get one with more megapixels and/or longer zoom for half the price.

cannon

great camera, good price. Two of the sites were con artists , offered low prices, if you ordered attachments. no deal otherwise. Also said camera was a grey market camera and had to be sent back to Japan for any warranty work.

Very Nice Camera!

Easy to use, nice feel, and would reccomend this to any level of photo buffs looking for a point and shoot camera!

Great Camera

This is a great point-and-shoot camera. It fits in my pocket and is great for traveling!

Canon Powershot

Great Camera, easy to use. Purchased it for older family member for ease of use! Highly recommended.

Canon Powershot A1000IS

Camera was purchased for my wife who reluctently agreed to enter the digital age. Wanted a point and shoot camera that was compact and fairly simple to use but she still wanted occasional creative control. She takes many photos in bright sunlight so a optical viewfinder(not too many point and shoot digitals have them) was a must since many LCD screens are difficult to see in bright light. So far the camera has met or exceeded her expectations. She took a whole series of photos outdoors in bright sunlight and photos taken at the Thanksgiving Dinner table and sent to the local Walgreens for processing were very good. Took a short video with a 4GB HC card just for fun and it actually looks pretty good on playback! All in all so far the camera is performing very well.

Canon PowerShot SD1100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Pink) with Selphy CP760 Photo Printer (Pink)

Good Camera - Lousy Software

Perfect little camera for the money. Good pics except for low light group shots. The flash isn't designed for that, just closer up shots. My wife uses for real estate and likes it. Video is not bad either with a large SD card. Don't even think about installing the software!! It installed on one computer but failed on the other half way through. I could not remove it and the Canon WEB site is no help at all. You can use the Microsoft downloader just fine to download pics and video. Again, don't install the software!!

Awesome little camera

This is everything I wanted in a sub compact camera....you tell the camera how good a picture you want to take and it does the rest...even the video comes out clean and clear with ease. Taking pictures in dark places, the pic comes out a little grainy, but it's still there. Before taking any picturs, you tell the camera what you want, the kind of light your in, etc.etc. and it does the rest. Pics are clean, clear and beautiful. I'll never own another camera unless it's a subcompact and canon makes the best

Canon Camera

I really like this camera! I bought one like it last year but my husband lost it. I bought this one in pink so I knew he wouldn't use it. I received it extremely quick so that I could use it for the Holidays. Thanks Amazon!!

nice little camera

It works perfectly fine so far, and small and handy. It's a good choice for casual photographing for this price. Like it a lot.

Good performance

Good performance, image stabilization is decent... very quick to take a photo after powering on... overall good performance... i especially use the high iso mode to take pictures without using flash, when shooting through glass...

Canon PowerShot SD800 IS 7.1MP Digital Elph Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Image-Stabilized Optical Zoom

Canon PowerShot SD800 IS 7.1MP Digital Elph Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Image-Stabilized Optical Zoom

Hard to beat, Really hard to beat

I have been using this camera for over 18 months, and taken several thousands of pictures. I have a backpack full of DSLR equipment, tripod, prime lenses, and so on, but carry this little camera in a pocket so that I never miss a shot. Its handy to have, I pop it out of my pocket to record all my travels on a seconds notice. The size and weight fit fine in a front jeans pocket. Key features: -FAST start up, power button to photo lag is short enough to catch anything, much better than some competing cameras. -Wide angle is just right, but don't forget to zoom in for most pictures -Image Stabilization is not a gimmick, work great. -COLORS! I use -2/3 exposure compensation, colors and exposure are great. Tip up or down to include more or less sky for quick adjustments on the fly, half press the shutter, then frame your shot. -Tiny portable battery charger and excellent battery life. The bad: -Soft lens, especially at wide angles -Front face and screen scratch easily when used as designed, carried in a pocket with keys and change, tossed in the center console, etc. No actual harm though, just cosmetic. The useless: -Auto mode. Never use it. Use manual, turn the flash off, add -2/3 or so EC for better exposure and colors. -Viewfinder. Battery life is good enough that I don't bother shooting with the LCD turned off. Tiny, hard to use, inaccurate, dim. I have taken dozens of identical pictures with this camera and my DSLR. I pop this baby out of my pocket, snap a shot, and slip it away again. The DSLR gets set up with expensive prime lenses, a tripod, and mirror lockup. Jpegs printed straight from each camera at 4x6 are HARD TO TELL APART. Now that is some high praise! However, when printed at 8x10 the difference is significant, and the canon is very soft. I'm using a Minolta 7D 6mp DSLR, it has MUCH more resolution than the 7.1mp canon (megapixels are positively meaningless). Fine color gradations are sometimes clearly better from the SLR, shadow areas appear much clearer, and noise is sometimes less. To restate: At 4x6 the canon SD800IS performs almost exactly as good as a heavy bag full of $5,000 worth of professional equipment. At 8x10, the difference is clear and obvious though and the SLR wins handily. At larger prints, the canon is unable to perform unless your subject lends itself to low resolution. Also, the little pocket camera cannot do super wide angles, long telephoto, blurred backgrounds, or other fancy setups. Its limited to standard shots. The IS works well, and you can brace the camera against fence posts, walls, or other fixed objects for longer shots. I highly recommend this camera and its replacement, the SD880IS. A camera like this is a must have for anyone. The whole SD series are great cameras, between friends and family I have tried about five different models and they all do well. Differences are battery life, IS, wide angle, and handling quirks such as getting into manual mode.

It would be 5* but for one failing.

I've had this camera 1 year now. It's the Euro model [IXUS 850 IS] which is the same beast as the SD800. This camera was marketed as 'the serious photographer's side arm' & I think that's dead right. I've carried it with me pretty much the all the time, which is the whole point of owning it. As a pro of 3 decades who owned & used all formats from 10" x 8" to 35mm, after a lot of thought & brain-numbing research, my compact digi camera had to posses 3 prime attributes. A few mega-pixels +/- was not an issue for a camera of this sort. The following points were paramount to me. 1] It had to be able to fit with ease into a shirt pocket. 2] It had to have an optical v/finder. The 'sleep-walker' posture of framing up with the screen is a no-no for a variety of reasons, not least of which is vastly increased battery drain. 3] It had to have a 28mm [35mm equiv] lens. The camera has performed well beyond my expectations. It takes wonderful photos in a wide variety of conditions, some of which I found astonishing that it should produce anything at all, let alone images of such quality. If you run the results through a lab test or compare it with cameras much higher up the quality scale, you will find things to beef about. But for a camera of this type, in the sector it inhabits, it's amazing. The deduction of 1 star comes about because the covers for the card/battery bay and the connections bay are woefully flimsy. Real care has to be taken every time these covers are opened/closed. I have a silicone 'skin' on my IXUS [which I very much recommend] and peeling apart the cut-out over the card bay and then gingerly opening the cover needs 100% concentration. One slip and you could easily tear the cover right off. This camera is now no longer on Canon's current range and there is no direct replacement. The only camera that has a 28mm w/a has no v/finder. I've complained to Canon about leaving a hole where this model used to be. There is no alternative but second-hand or 'new old stock' sellers. And note: some of these new cameras are now right back up to the original retail price! That's because, without going right to the top of the Canon compact range - the new G10, which is expensive and substantially larger - there's nothing else available.

Don't buy a Canon!

I got the fatal "Lens Error" after 10 months. This was a great camera, but I think a camera should last a little longer. This is a HUGE problem with Canon Powershots, and I really wish I had known about it BEFORE I bought this camera last Christmas. My camera is still under warranty, but they say that it is due to abuse and won't cover it. It was not abused, it just stopped working.

Lens error after 1 year!

I love the quality of Canon pictures, but after 1 year of use, we had the notorious "lens error". To repair it is more expensive than to buy a new camera. If you google lens error and canon, you will see that this is a common problem with canon cameras. So you are buying a good camera, but it won't last long.

Couldn't ask for more.

I purchased this camera about 18 months ago, and couldn't be more thrilled with it! It is compact enough to be carried in a purse or pocket, and the battery life is incredible - I've only had to battery 5 times since purchase, with very regular use. The image quality is great, and in some cases is actually better than my Canon XTi DSLR camera when it comes to low-light or candid and uncomposed shots. The SD800 is by far the best point-and-shoot camera I have ever come across, and has made me a loyal Canon customer for life. Highly recommended!

Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black)

Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black)

I love this camera

I absolutely love my Cannon PowerShot SD870IS camera. I found a nice case to keep it in at RS. It takes great pictures and it is small enough that I carry it in its case in my purse at all times. My purse is not like a suit case either. There are a lot of things that I have not learned to use on it yet and maybe never will.I have only had one other digital camera, so I am not an expert on them. I really love the stabilizer that actually works. I am not real steady with taking pictures or any thing else as far as that goes. Like previously stated, I only have my Kodak Easy Share to compare it with and that one is too big to carry in my purse. The pictures with my Cannon are far superior to my Easy Share pictures, also. I like taking pictures of wild life. It is great to have on me at all times as I never know when a photo opt is going to come along. It is easy to use, cause I am a dummy. The only thing that I have found that I wish were different so far, is that the turn off button and the snap button are a little too close together and I find myself turning off the camera unexpectedly. Fingers must be too big. Anyway... as a causual photographer, I really do like this camera and would and have recommeded it. airtips

Great for active situations and ebay photos

The LCD screens on most cameras are too small for me to see well, but this camera has a huge screen, which allows for fast, one-handed operation, even from horseback. That was a significant factor in my purchase decision and I've not been disappointed. The camera takes very close shots with great clarity which is unusual for a point and shoot. In a low light indoor situation, the limited flash distance is an advantage if you're trying to photograph a particular item and don't want to show the rest of your room. That limited flash isn't good if you're trying to capture a group at a long table in a dim restaurant, however--you won't see the people toward the back very well. I wish the camera were perfect because with its small, sleek size, I can easily carry it everywhere with me and as a result have been able to capture some super shots that presented themselves unexpectedly. No more wishing I had a good camera at hand--because I do. I've not yet found a camera that is perfect for everything, and for what this camera does well, together with its portability and ease of use, I've been very pleased. With only a 3.8x zoom, I know I'm not going to get the distant mountain wildlife shot, but with the clarity and stunning color I get in decent light, the 8mp quality allows me to zoom in and enlarge a portion of a picture pretty well when I'm photo editing on the computer later. I've had the camera for about a year and have had no problems with it. It's gotten a lot of use and will continue to. Battery life is great.

Flash Spots and Red-Eye!

I did a lot of research for a camera, and the SD870 was rated extremely high in a lot of reviews, so I bought one after playing around with it a bit. The feel is great and the options are good, but over half my indoor flash shots have a couple of round spots on them. It looks as if there's something on the lens, but that's not the case. I see this is an issue in many other forums. Another big issue is that the red-eye reduction is terrible on this camera. Compared to my previous Olympus without red-eye reduction, the Canon is awful. Nearly every single flash shot accentuates red-eye. It's far worse than other cameras that I have used.

so far, so good

I bought this camera to replace my 5MP wide angle PowerShot. Besides being much slimmer and lighter, it has a nice big screen. This camera is so well made, it survived an underwater dunking when I slipped while hiking in Maine and it fell into a crack filled with water. The camera was off at the time, and it went completely under. I thought it would be ruined, but after about 2 days of dryout time, it was as good as new. I don't miss not having a viewfinder, but things are a little crowded on the backside, sometimes I have to put my thumb on the LCD. Also, the power button is right next the the shutter button, and sometimes instead of taking the photo, I accidentally turn the camera off. Otherwise, I have no complaints. It takes beautiful pictures, the video is much better quality then the 5MP version, the battery has good life. I put a screen protector over the LCD, so it does not get scratched. Wide angle is great for landscapes and architecture.

Sleek but ok

It captures colors well, but didn't have as much optical resolution as I had expected. In all, an ok investment.

Canon PowerShot A720IS 8MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Canon PowerShot A720IS 8MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Camera Works Well for Me

This camera is just what I needed to take pictures of items for my Etsy store and my blog. It's easy, straightforward, and takes lovely pictures. The only ackward feature for me is working the little door to the photo cards and batteries.

Best Camera Ever and Very Durable!!!

This is the Best camera I have ever owned. I liked it so much that I bought another one for my wife. I fly a AirCreation Trike and I take photos from the air. It handles very well with one hand operation, (the other hand is doing the flying). Very clear pictures because of the stabilization. Easy to review pictures on the back of the camera and is also nice to have a viewfinder for very sunny days. Very good price. $200 plus $20 for a Kingston 2GB, 120X ultimate SD card. R. Holm

Almost perfect

Canon has been making what I consider to be the best line of digital cameras since Digital Day One. This camera does everything I want it to do, and provides an excellent result. Canon's cameras always seem to have the best and easiest to use menu functions. My only disappointment is that, although this isn't supposed to be water resistant, it is extremely sensitive to moisture on the LCD panel. I keep the camera in a waterproof case while paddling, but just the little bit of moisture I transfer to the camera from my hands results in the failure of the LCD to work until I can dry it out later. I'd buy the $200 housing, but it might not fit my next camera which, according to my experience, I'll be needing in another year or two.

I'm not a pro but I like it

i haven't gotten too into the camera as of yet, but have taken it to various odd places and just shot with the auto functions on it. haven't had too much of an issue with light or night, the zoom is fabulous!!! you can get out pretty far and it usually doesn't blur as far out as it goes depending on light/what you're looking at. does take longer to load for kid shots but it didn't really bother me i got great shots of my nieces and nephew running around. also did some video shots of them swimming which turned out fine a lot more than i expected out of a $200 camera for sure. i did a lot of research and this was the one recommended to me by a friend who has sold pictures he has taken on his dslr...i still researched it and from reviews of other products this one seemed the best (obviously i didn't review EVERYTHING but i looked at mostly canon and nikon, even scoped out a couple of kodaks but this one had best reviews) a lot of people seem to complain about load time or cameras eating batteries but i think this seems absolutely fine! so far, so great!

Canon PowerShot A720

This camera is no longer made. I followed professional reviewers' advice and tracked one down. I find it as billed, including the plastic feel. However, that one negative is easy to forgive and forget considering all the positives. The one I like best is that in auto mode it is easy to use and as I learn, the camera has lots of room to grow with me. Next best, the small size makes it handy to tote.

Canon PowerShot SX100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black)

Canon PowerShot SX100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black)

Fantastic camera!

I've had some cheap, not-so-great cameras in the past, then when I decided I really needed a quality product I bought this one. I couldn't be more pleased! The picture quality is really astounding. Even the video quality is beyond my expectations. There's so many settings it's almost overwhelming! But after reading the manual back and forth I finally understood all the amazing features (mostly, haha). My Dad has this camera too and he's not the technical type person to read manuals or change settings, so even he is able to take great pictures on auto mode. The only con is that the batteries get sucked up like you wouldn't believe. But I recently ordered the Canon ACK-800 AC Adapter, which should charge the camera to avoid that. Overall, I'm VERY pleased with my purchase and I would recommend it to anyone!

Canon PowerShot SD950IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 3.7x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Titanium)

Canon PowerShot SD950IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 3.7x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Titanium)

Good camera, tough but compact.

Our daughter has one and takes such good pics that we decided to get the same model. Love the titanium case and large LED display. Haven't taken anything but point-and-shoot so far, but it's great to download directly from the camera (via USB connection) to our computer (Mac/iPhoto).

Love the movies!!!

This is such a great camera. Very compact and yet gets great pictures. The movies are fantastic!!! Who would think a camera for digital photos which are great, would also take great movies. Highly recommend.

Very durable, great camera and customer service

The Canon PowerShot SD950IS is the greatest point-and-shoot digital camera that I have ever used. Some notable points: => 12 megapixels is not necessary for printing standard 3x5 snapshots, but there are an increasing number of companies (such as ShutterFly) which create projects such as calendars storybooks from your prints. The extra megapixels definitely come in handy when doing projects like these. => The titanium shell is not a gimmick! I dropped this camera off a pickup truck and it landed on a concrete road. I thought it would be busted for sure, but it wasn't even scratched! => Image stabilization is not a gimmick! In my experiments, image stabilization is crucial for low-light photography because it allows me to quarter my shutter speed and take clear pictures with 75% less light. => I needed to perform warranty repairs because a black spot was appearing in all of my photos. I'm unsure if it had anything to do with the incident described above. Despite the fact that the damage may have been due to dropping and the serial number had rubbed off, Canon replaced the optics and sent it back to me for no charge. The repair experience was pleasant and I will remember this when I buy my next camera. => With 12 megapixels, digital cameras are now capturing as much detail as film cameras. My experiments revealed that the amount of detail in the images is comparable to 200 speed APS film or 400 speed 35mm film. => Although daytime images look great, pictures taken in low-light conditions suffer. If you're in flash range, the flash is accurately exposed (unlike a Sony digital camera that I used), but flash or no flash, focusing in the dark is slow and inaccurate. This will be a problem with any compact digital camera. => Movies are acceptable, but the files are very large because they lack the MPEG compression capabilities of Sony cameras. It is difficult to compress the files later because of the MJPEG compression previously applied. This is something for YouTube addicts to keep in mind -- this camera is not a camcorder.

Flawless Camera

I have had many pro cameras for many years. I wanted the ease of a point and shoot camera but with superior optics and built in software to compensate for less than perfect lighting conditions. The camera works very well, and I did not have to use any of the extra technology that the camera comes with. As with all fine cameras do not drop or sit on the camera, and buy and use the plastic film LCD screen protector to Keep the LCD from being scratched or nicked.

Power Shot SD950

The picture quality is excellent. You have to remove the battery for charging just something I have to get used to. I have no complaints. Amazon was easy to deal with and shipping was fast to Hawaii. I previously had a Sony Cyber-shot that I was very happy with easy to carry and very good pictures. But the light sensor went out at 2 + years the 5 year warranty turned out to be worthless. We have two other Canon Power Shots and they have been excellent. Sony lost my business and Canon has it.

Canon PowerShot SD750 7.1MP Digital Elph Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Black)

Canon PowerShot SD750 7.1MP Digital Elph Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Black)

Very disappointing!!

I purchased this camera 8 months ago. Still images are almost always blurry. The zoom quit working after just 4 months. The pictures come out grainy appearing, all no matter the setting. The flash works very poorly, as well, and you must be very close to your subject to have any effect. Also, there is a delay when you take a picture, of up to 4 seconds, so if you need a quick shot, it won't happen. I would not recommend this camera.

Another winner in the ELPH series

This is my THIRD Canon Elph, and I enjoy each one more than the previous one. As a happy owner of an SD400, I moved onto this one as an upgrade and I have not been disappointed. The functions of this one are even better than previous models. The video is actually SO great for a small point and shoot that I find myself using it more and more for clips of the kids and we watch the video on a HUGE screen tv and it looks great! I think redeye processing on this model has improved a bit over the previous model, but I still think it could do better. That's really my ONLY complaint with this camera. I've taken great shots and had them blown up to posters for my wall. I love the fun color features of this camera as well. It does great night shots and I've taken some wonderful fireworks photos. I don't leave home without this camera!

Great point and shoot

I have a rebel XTi and it is a wonderful camera but for my college design class it is not particularly handy for getting from one place to another, especially to photograph process work in class everyday. So naturally I came straight here to buy this one because of excellent ship timing and good customer service. I'm a electronics sales person at a large office supplier and had previously sold this camera not only to other people but to myself figuratively as well. I had seen it in action in the store previously and wanted one myself. I love it, have had it for 3 or 4 weeks no problems with functionality at all. The screen got scuffed a bit but that's to be expected and doesn't necessarily degrade my opinion of the camera, especially because its mostly my fault. Fits in my pocket great too, good for Friday nights and such. Its a little slow in red eye mode but that's easily fixed by changing it out of that mode. Love the screen size. Excellent camera, buy it.

Can't see screen when it's sunny

When I ordered this camera, I didn't realized it didn't have an optical viewfinder. The upshot is that it has a wonderful, large LCD screen that is perfect--unless it is sunny out, in which case the screen is totally washed out and you are left shooting blindly and hoping for the best. It does take great pictures, but the lack of viewfinder is a major flaw if you ever want to take photos on a bright day.

Great Pocket Camera

I used this camera in Mexico for a week and it was fantastic both indoors and out. It also took great sunset shots.

Canon PowerShot SD770IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black)

Canon PowerShot SD770IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black)

Just a great camera

Ive owned and still have several Canon cameras G9, G2, G3,G5,G6, SD700IS, SD1000, SD1100 and this beauty the SD770IS. I hang on to them for a while then give them to my children and grandchildren & then replace them because I really enjoy them. The 770IS is not a G9 but I will tell you its close. The 770IS is a wonderful peice of equipment, a casual camera user might not use all the advantages this camera has to offer, so READ THE MANUAL its all there and easy to understand. I wish Nikon could write manuals the way Canon does, I have a few Nikon SLRs and the manuals are daunting. Love the photo results from Nikon SLRs hate the manuals. You cant go wrong with this camera and buying from Amazon is a breeze, not to mention the price is most times the best price.

Canon 770 IS, exactly as ordered

For anyone thinking about ordering this camera, it is amazing what they have put into such a small package. Included in the deal was a 4 gig sd card. All products were as advertised, and the free delivery came a day earlier than promised. There seems to be a lot of choices to pick from when using the menu, and that might take awhile for me, my attention span is shorter than a puppy. As of this moment, I am really glad I ordered this camera and glad I ordered it from Amazon. The best price, great service, and quick and free delivery.

must have!!!!

the most amazing camera ive ever owned! it takes the most spectacular pictures and its so small! I always get compliments on the picture quality and my sister who is a professional photographer recommended it to me. I highly recommend it!

the proof is in the pictures

This camera was a replacement to a previous Canon 590. I was able to compare its function and results with that as well as my daughter's Sony 8mp Cybershot. Although physically this is a much different camera in terms of size, functionally it is similar to the 590 with minor differences. With the 590 there is a setting for both "night shot" & "night scene" where there is no "night scene" setting on the 770. However, pictures shot at night with the 770 fared as well if not better than the 590 as long as the camera was steady. The extra two megapixels seem to really make a difference in terms of color and clarity. I am not a professional photographer, but I'm not a rank amateur either. Compared to the Sony, these pictures jump out at you. The color in the Sony appears washed out when placed next to the Canon. We had two separate family events where several pictures of the same scene were shot with each camera so we could actually compare the pictures on the computer side by side. The difference is stunning. For the person who isn't interested in all the technical data, the bottom line is.... the Canon 770is 10mp camera takes excellent pictures with excellent color and clarity. It is compact and easy to manage except perhaps for those who have sausages for fingers (you know who you are). The price has recently dropped as well, so for a great buy, I'd strongly recommend this camera.

Great Camera, good deal!

This is the second camera of this type we have bought. We got this one for our daughter and she loves it. Ease of use and small enough to fit into her purse. Love the Canon cameras.

Canon Powershot E1 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Blue)

Canon Powershot E1 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Blue)

A Camera that has it all

I was not expecting how easy it was to use this camera but with all its features you can't go wrong. It has too many features to pin point just one. You have to buy it and see for your self. You can't go wrong with this one and the price is just right.

The Canon Powershot E1 is AMAZING!

I just needed a camera for fun..and I have had a Canon before. I didn't like that my old one had a rechargeable battery that didn't last long so I am really happy to find one like my old one that is a million times better in quality and it takes real batteries that LAST!! I LOVE IT!! Takes great pictures and it's super easy to use...comparing it to my old one (which was an Elph), it takes much faster pictures although you do have to hold the shutter button down to take a picture which is annoying to have to tell other people using it. Overall I highly reccommend it..takes great pictures!!!

Canon Powershot G10 14.7MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Canon Powershot G10 14.7MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Great camera no matter what!

I was hoping to find a camera that felt like a camera, handled more like a digital SLR, but was still highly portable. I researched and researched several and kept coming back to the G10. I read reviews from every camera rating service I could find and then I read the reviews by the typical user. I took this very seriously having already purchased two pocket-sized digitals which were "okay," but not what I wanted and in my job I have experience with the Nikon D70, D90, and D40 and didn't want a full-sized DSLR. In the end, I decided that even if the camera produced "noise" above ISO 200--it was the camera for me. So, I plucked down my credit card to Amazon and ordered last week. It came a few days later and this weekend I got to spend several hours snapping away. I will say I am SOLD on this camera. While I'm not a professional, I do quite a bit of photography as part of my job. I made the right choice. Thanks Canon.

The joy of manual control

The Canon G10 is a wonderful, powerful point and shoot camera with full manual control. It combines a great mix of attributes that add up to a fantastic camera to carry everywhere. I have been toting it all over Manhattan and have shot hundreds of pictures now. Having the creative control to set aperture and shutter speed allows one to fine tune exposure in a way that has not really been possible with point and shoots. The fact that it shoots large raw files is an added bonus. I am a little put out with Adobe for not including G10 support in a version of camera raw that works with CS3. Grrrrr. It is really nice to be able to work a raw file and have the same flexibility that I do with the files from my D200. The battery seems to have been conjured up by the enegizer bunny, it just keeps going and going. It literally will go for hundreds of shots between charges. The control layout also works very well. The exposure compensation dial on the left side is so easy to manipulate when you are shooting in either full auto, aperture priority, or shutter priority. ISO and shooting mode on the right are also easy to access. The controls all feel very solid and provide positive feedback as they are manipulated. The camera fits nicely in a coat pocket and I recommend the Kata DP 415 belt pouch as an alternative. This camera is perfect for a photographer looking for creative control and best in class image quality. The only people I would advise to steer away from this model are those for whom size is a much bigger priority than image quality. If you are just a casual shooter looking for a snap shooter there are probably better alternatives.

Fantastic

This camera takes wonderful pictures, and does not have the bulk of a DSLR. The outdoor pictures are professional quality - the indoor pictures are still very good. My only complaint would be that the flash on this camera leaves indoor pictures with something to be desired.

G10 - better than my Konica Hexar, only digital!

I have spent hours fooling around with this camera, taking pictures, checking the manual, taking more pictures, etc. All the stuff in the manual makes the camera seem overly complex, but if the more you mess with it the more it all makes perfect sense. Meanwhile, the pictures are great! Got a nice picture of Zeke, my 11-yr old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and my pal Williamson, a "pro-sumer" photog, said that the picture actually made Zeke look young. I can take decent pictures using the large LCD display without having to use my grampa glasses. Big improvement over the postage stamp display on my Minolta DiMage X, which I have been using for the last few years. Man, I can hardly wait to get this thing out on some motorcycle rides. It's easy to change the picture resolution. I'll run it at about 1 Mb for general shooting, and then bump it to the highest rez .jpg for pictures where we all line our bikes up and have some mountain in the background. I like this much better than my wife's Nikon D70S. Seeya ATB

Controversial and promising.

Bought this camera in a BEST BUY store in lower broadway here in Manhattan. That was a very silly decision of me to buy it in that store. I will get back to this a little later. I had great hope for this camera as i shoot a lot of macros of jewelry and fine watches. Previous cameras were either lost or given as a gift so i decided to buy this G10. I also considered a Canon XSI which would produce the best in-door pictures with its big sensor and sharp optics if bought seperately. Clearly i opted for this one trying to get something compact for carrying aroung in a bag on a day-to-day basis. My verdict? I`m greatly disappointed. I chose a P-mode and tried to adjust things in a camera settings. My first disappointment was when i didn`t find a Sharpness setting. That`s too bad, then i couldnt find a contrast mode... Was that for real, i kept asking myself. Ok, lets give it a try. All the pictures i took indoors came out flat, dim and ugly. Even compared to my previous Lumix fx8 that i gave to my father on a trip overseas were bad enough. Panasonic simply beats G10 by a margin. I returned the camera even though they charged me 15% of restocking fee. That was my fault, i should have bought in a dedicated camera store like Broadway 17St or J&R... I lost roughly 75$$ but still was eager to return it. Now i`m exploring reviews of Panasonic LX3, i will probably go for it.

Canon PowerShot A470 7.1 MP Digital Camera with 3.4x Optical Zoom (Orange)

Canon PowerShot A470 7.1 MP Digital Camera with 3.4x Optical Zoom (Orange)

Great for the price.

I've had much more expensive cannons with rechargeable batteries. Replacement batteries tend to be expensive. I'm content just tossing the double a's when they're fried. Cheaper in the long run.

I LOVE this little camera!

Researched and researched cameras until I was researched OUT! Saw this little jewel and decided (based on other reviews) I should try it. SOOOOO glad I did! Human-friendly camera, easy to use, GREAT pics and just what else could you ask for? Oh yeah....was at a GREAT price. Got an HP camera a couple years ago, cost much more and wasn't anywhere as user-friendly as this one. Plus, it kept "eating" batteries so couldn't keep it working. Eveyone that has seen this one and the pics taken are astounded by them. If you're looking for a reasonably priced, easy to use camera that will delight you with beautiful results of your efforts....BUY THIS ONE!!!!

Small & Versatile

Amazing versatility in a small, lightweight camera. Uses only 2 AA batteries; we had been accustomed to needing 4. User manual is a PDF file. You'll need to purchase a larger capacity memory card, as we found out on Thanksgiving day.

New camera malfunctions and its 2 months old..

This camera was bought for me as a gift and its barely two months old and the batteries are draining brand new after one or two pics. I AM SO UPSET! Now I can't take pics for the holidays. My next camera wont be a canon for sure!

Very nice camera.

For the price, it really can't be beat. Takes great pictures and is a total steal. Nothing in its price range can compare at this point.

Canon Powershot A1000IS 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Purple)

Canon Powershot A1000IS 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Purple)

Good quality images but needs some skill

I bought this camera about 15 days back. I have used it a couple of times indoors, outdoors and indoors with low-light conditions. Used correctly, this camera does a great job of taking good quality images. I had to play with the camera for about 15-20 mins to get familiar with it so I could take the best pictures possible. My sister owned a Powershot A530 before this one and i had the same experience with that too. This camera fits nicely in your jeans pocket and is quite light. You will need a tripod to take good low-light shots. I have a cat and a rabbit and a 3 yr old nephew - The kids and pets setting really works well to take pictures of them. Generally the few manual settings it does have are good enough for a serious amateur photographer. One gripe I do have is that with regular AA alkaline batteries the flash recycle time can go up to 8 seconds and the camera is blank and unusable during this time. This of course is a problem with most canon Powershots. The solution I have found is to use batteries made specifically for taking pictures (Duracell makes some) or just use rechargeable NiMH batteries. This works great. Almost down to 1 sec between shots with that. Overall I'd definitely recommend this camera to anyone. But you have to be a little patient and get used to it first - I think this is true for any good camera out there though.

rew

Great service and great product. Was for a intro digital photo class, and is perfect especially for cost. Nice to be able to use "normal" aa batts too.

Very good buying experience

A very smooth buying experience -- I received what I wanted, in a short period of time, for a good price.

I love almost everything about my A1000

I got this camera a few weeks ago to replace a previous Canon digital camera (the A540) that I absolutely loved. So far I've been very happy with this one, with one glaring exception - not specifically about the camera itself, but rather the software that comes with it. I'm an amateur photographer and find that this type of point-and-shoot works well for me - especially since it has a 4x optical zoom which gives clearer, more vivid photos. I really like how easy the Canon cameras are to use and the range of features - and this one doesn't disappoint. I also like the 2.5" LCD and the fact that this camera is small enough to easily fit in a pocket or purse. It's really very versatile and I love that about it. The only things that I really can complain about are that I do somewhat miss the chunky handgrip on my previous Canon, but that's not a huge deal. What IS a huge deal, for me anyway, is their 'updated' version of the Camera Window software that comes with this camera. This is the software that you run to download photos from the camera - and I can't believe how horrible this particular version is. The previous version that I used with my other Canon camera was great - it was windows-based and you could select any photos on your card then download, print or delete them as you wished. However, in this new version - it's got a black interface, no text by the icons to tell you what they do - and there is no way to delete the photos from your card. I e-mailed Canon to double-check and was told that yes, this is the case - you have to use Windows Explorer to delete your photos. Why I would want to use two different programs when before I could easily use just one is beyond me... I'm going to re-install the old version that I have and hope that it will work with this camera, because I am incredibly annoyed with the new version right now. Other than the software issue, I love this camera and think that it's a very good choice for someone who wants a camera that takes a great quality photo and is easy to use and carry around. I only hope that Canon will re-think the Camera Window decision - I'm a loyal Canon enthusiast, but am very disappointed in them right now.

Disappointed - had to return it

I did some research and thought this would be a nice - easy to use camera for the price. I was most interested in the "easy" mode for my wife - which supposedly makes picture taking "worry free" where the camera selects the "optimal" settings automatically. So I'm in my halloween costume and my wife wants take a picture. She shoots from a few feet away inside a fairly well lit room - the camera flashes - should be fine. It comes out very dark. She tries again from the same spot - still very dark. I try taking a picture of her in the same place - too dark. I turn off the autoflash and try again - picture comes out fine with no flash. I wanted a camera that would take a nice picture without someone having to decide whether or not to turn the flash on or off. I believe the problem is that the camera is defective and the flash is not in sync with the shutter. When it thinks it's using the flash, it probably automatically sets the shutter speed for the brightness of the flash. If the shutter clicks when it's not flashing, the shutter speed is too fast for the light conditions (thus - the pictures being too dark). We tried taking a number of pictures around the house in either "Auto" or "Easy" modes with autoflash on and got about 90% too dark and even a few that were so bright they were completely washed out (again - probably poor flash timing or shutter speed not matching the flash). Anyway, bummer. Only had had the camera a couple days, so I sent it back to Amazon for a refund. Now I'm trying to figure out what to buy next. I know that Canon is a popular brand and must be doing something right, but after this experience, might try another brand.

Canon PowerShot A580 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom

Canon PowerShot A580 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom

great camera

wow - what a great camera. The features that I wanted was EASY to operate, point and shoot camera. That is exactly what I got. Just a great camera that fits in your hand, slides in a purse to go anywhere and be ready at all times to take great pic's of kids. It does use AA battaries but with 4 kids I keep a lot of those on hand. Also, I have been told that if I would use the lithium AA they would last longer. Really easy to put pic's on my computer and share them. I really like this camera!!

Great Entry Level Digital Camera - Tons of Features

Excellent entry level camera for your $. (Compare with Canon A590 IS before you buy) Pros: - 8 megapixel - Excellent image quality. It has Canon's Digic III image processor. - Canon Genuine Face Detection Technology. Automatically detects, tracks, focuses and optimizes the exposure on up-to nine human faces in the frame. - Good in low light - Long battery life. Uses 2 regular double AA batteries. - Zoom is 4X. - Fast startup. When you turn on the camera, you can almost shoot right away. - Huge 2.5 LCD screen + viewfinder - Manual control for ISO (80 to 1600) - Built-in speaker - Shoots 640x480 video with audio Cons: - Feels small and awkward in your hands - Looks

Great quality.

I did a little research before buying a camera and when I saw the sample photos and videos shot with the A580 I didn't look further. This was all I needed. The photos are all clear and huge. I took a shot in complete darkness and it came out like I shot it at daylight. I really can't find a flaw to this camera. Even the price is excellent. One of the best things I ever bought.

great little camera

Easy to use, great pictures. Wish it came with carry case to protect it though

Buy one!

We recently returned from a month long trip, my wife has a Canon A540 and I was using a Sony DSC700. There is no comparison in the quality of photo's between the two cameras...we both shot several hundred photo's...the Canon photo's won hands down! So I purchased a new Canon A580 and we both love it. Plus now the the SD cards can be used in either one...Sony uses a proprietary duo-card....Canons for us from here on out.

Canon Powershot SX110IS 9MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

Canon Powershot SX110IS 9MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

Professional for Non-Professional Cost!

This camera takes exceptional pictures! Huge 3" viewing screen, and the zoom quality is absolutely amazing! Though you can set it on "auto" and take great pictures that way, it's manual settings allow you to adjust shutter speed, aperture, white balance, and much more to take those beautiful pictures that professional cameras take. I've read reviews that said it eats batteries, but in my experience, that's only if you're constantly using the flash. If your setting are right, you don't need the flash on most the time, unless most of your shooting is done in low/dark light. Frankly, i rarely use the flash unless i'm in that kind of light setting and my pictures look better for it. I would NOT recommend this camera for the first time, or casual picture-taker. This camera is best suited for someone who has a growing interest in taking better pictures because while you're learning to use the more advanced features (which takes time and practice) you can still take great shots in the "auto" setting. THREE NEGATIVES: 1. It's somewhat heavy (which i don't mind but you might). 2. Also, when you DO use the flash, the viewing delay time is pretty significant. What I mean is as soon as you take a picture with the flash on you will have to wait atleast four seconds to take another picture. 3. There is no eye viewer (i'm sure that's not the correct term). What i mean is - you can only view your subject on the viewing screen, not by peeking through the eye hole that most cameras have.

Two Thumbs Up

I did more than my fair share of research before purchasing this camera. I actually purchased it, exchanged it for a different camera and then came back to this one for its superior quality. We wanted a camera with a decent zoom and unfortunately, that means you don't get a pocket-sized camera-it's a trade-off. The LCD screen is large and the image is clear and bright, not grainy like some cameras. The video feature, which we tried the other day, is a nice add-on. Yes, you don't have the option to zoom in, but that's why you buy a camcorder. It's a nice feature to have on the camera for those days you don't have that along. The menu is easy to use and I like being able to adjust as much or as little as I want. I wasn't sure whether I'd like a pop-up flash, but it becomes pretty automatic to put it up and if you don't, the camera reminds you. Lastly, I like being able to review my pictures without turning the camera on. There is some lag time after a picture has been taken, but I am still using the memory card it came with while awaiting the arrival of my new one. Once I have rechargeable batteries (I ordered Eneloop, which was recommended to me) and my Ultra II memory card, I expect to see some difference. All in all, I am quite happy with this product.

Everthing In A Camera I Could Hope For

I just wanted an easy-to-use and understandable camera. This camera is that and more. I can't believe all this camera does. It blew my mind. It's simple to use and the instruction book is easy to understand. I really appreciate the 3" viewer. For those seeking an advanced camera capable of just about anything, this camera provides that too.

mom with interest in photography

I think this is a great camera fr the money. The specs are great for a reasonable price. It does not have a viewfinder window instead the lcd screen is the window. It took a little bit to get used too, I am happy I got this camera.

Nice Camera for the Price!

We are currently on a cross country trip from Pa to California and I can't believe some of the terrific shots I have been getting! When I want to be lazy I let the camera do it for me when I want to manually take my own I can! Gotta love it! Only thing I would suggest you buy a case!

Canon PowerShot A560 7.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom

Canon PowerShot A560 7.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom

Takes amazing pictures

I'm so pleased with my purchase. The camera does what it says. I get compliments whenever I show my pictures to people. My aunt has her own digital camera (a different make) but she'll always ask me to take pictures from my camera instead of hers when we go places. I couldn't ask for more. I'm in love with my camera.

problem prone

This is the 2nd Canon a-series camera I've had. Both have had problems relating to the lens cover. My daughter also had problems. Although the camera takes great pictures, the lens cover problems makes this series less than desirable. On the A560, the lens cover requires a finger nail assist to open. It's annoying after a while. My next camera will not be a Canon.

camera

well worth the money I paid for camera, If you are a casual picture taker, or use for ebay pictures, works well. Would highly recommend

Not bad at all, but...

I've had this camera for about a year or so. It was a gift, mainly just to capture those moments in life that you just need to catch. That's what my dad said when he gave it to me anyway. I read all the one star reviews, and I'm happy to say that nothing like what is described in those reviews ever happened to me. I'm not a photography student, but I know if you are seriously into photography this is not the camera for you. Pros; durable, very nice picture quality, nice to look at, many choices of types of shooting to choose from. Cons; horrible battery life (Recommend investing in a lot of rechargeable batteries.) and, this may just be the memory card, but sometimes it takes so long between pictures. Overall, a very nice camera for the average picture taker.

Very Good Images

I own this camera and also a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18K 8.1MP Digital Camera with 18x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black). This was my first buy as a digital camera. Honestly speaking I bought only because it was well priced and available only for a reasonable frice giving 4X optical zoom. I really love this camera because of the image quality it produces both in day and low light situations(with flash). Video quality of this camera is also very good. The high exposure night mode also works well though it over illuminates the parts with even a small amount of light. Build: Camera has a good build though it wont fit into your pocket(because of the 2 AA container of the camera used to provide you grip as well) Technology: Its a good piece of camera in this price range. It gives you excellent quality of image in day time and poor to noisy in dark without flash or less exposure time (but I guess all the camera do the samething) Colors are slightly non natural and tend to get over exposed(mostly in high light situations or with flash). But you will definately appreciate the quality for indoors and even certain outdoor pics. Dont try to use the camera without a tripod when taking pictures with 4x or more zoom. Value for money : Good (though I guess Nikon with LiMH batteries can give you better value) I will recommend this camera for first time users / new users / ppl trying to learn photography and is in there first stage.

Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black)

Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black)

Best camera I've ever had!!

I am extremely happy with this camera!! Very easy to use!! Takes great photos!! It's definateley woth the money!!

Great for the price

I didn't have nor wanted to waste the extra money on the xsi. Spend your money on nice lenses. That is what will make the big difference in your photos not the body so much. Not much else to say, it's a Canon. Can't go wrong with it.

Canon REBEL XS simply a beautiful experience

I spent several weeks reviewing the REBEL XS vs it's many 10 MP adversaries, I even checked it against the ultra zooms as I wanted the convenience of video as well, but too many good things stood out with this camera and so I decided upon it. I bought the rebel XS and after days of dirt testing this camera I've found it a beautiful experience. Now I'm a professional videographer attached to a tv station in Trinidad & Tobago, my purpose for this camera was the need for a quick sharp still shot camera that would be impressive under low light and still capture impressive portrait shots to be used for my website and for large prints. I didn't want to shell out over a $1000. US for a camera body. What is tagged by Canon is true: The full auto mode is truly accurate and gives excellent shots always, it makes photography so easy for a beginner or intermediate. The portrait mode isn't blurry, images are clean, nicely toned, excellent in quality for large size prints. The P ( program mode) I like alot at first because this mode sets exposure so nicely I found it addictive. I shot alot of night pics of cars on a freeway, with bright, sharp, lively colours emerging. Night pics at 800 iso had very very very little noise, and I mean I was searching the pics on 15" monitors for reason to complain, but was really impressed. The auto focus is really quick. Th XS comes with "only" a 7 point auto focus system compared to the XSi 9 point, forgive me when I say there may be no need for another 2 points when the camera focusses so quick and so accurately. I have not gotten a soft image when shot with the auto focus operating. Now for those point and shoot cams that boast about "face detection"....5 faces...6,7, some even 15. I also have a 10 mp ultra zoom, this simply matters little if not at all, if the focussing ability of the camera is poor or average, and given the "average lens" quality they're made of. I have learnt clearly that a 10 MP ultra zoom simply cannot compare to a 10 MP D SLR...chalk and cheese. I also bought the Tamron 70mm - 300mm, F4-5.6 telephoto/ macro lens. No vignetting at either end of the lens. Auto iso is simply magnificent, have not taken a shot where the camera over estimated or underestimated the iso levels. The Manual mode of this camera is the most impressive for me. The rebel XS via various magazine testing has come up faster than it's other 10 MP rivals when it comes to fps shooting, and burst images. It really does shoot 3 fps consistently, it shoots 2.3 fps in low light, worst case is over 1 fps all at 10 MP quality. I haven't used a lower quality since, given I bought a Transcend 8GB SDHC card storage is not an issue. Most of my shooting has been at night, for the little done in daylight, it has been amazing. Colours are very bright, depth of field very very nice. Macros works well. Image optimizer simply shocked life out of me. I was in a shaded area and without flash it really improves the subject without over blowing the background, stuff that is almost impossible on point and shoot cams. Stuff I disagree with from the "reviews" : 1- "The camera feels cheaply built"....simply wrong, nothing is shabby, buttons are actually easy to press, doesn't have cheap clicks to them, the lens mount has a secure feel to it, and a proper snap when it is set. Battery compartment is certainly secure. Your finger must intricately open the door for entry, won't be an accident issue. Rubber door at a.v. ports snap in well. Rubber grip is firm enough, smooth enough to not irritate your hands. 2- " XS is "overpriced" compared to the XSi.....Xsi shoots slower than the XS, XSi picture quality is equal to the XS even though the XSi is 12 MP. The XSi may be the 3" LCD and a few other upgrades, but these upgrades don't add up when the picture is taken and the quality of both cameras match alike. I may have chosen the XSI if I wanted to spend the extra $150. u.s but for the lesser price, I'm yet to regret. 3- "The XS "only has a 2.5" LCD compared to a couple of it's rivals having 3" LCD's". I can see every thing clearly with this screen, even with Histograms, and grids onscreen. If LCD's get much bigger then canon may need to install a tv tuner as well....the 2.5" is more than sufficient. 4- "The XS doesn't have SPOT METERING compared to the XSi, so this is a big issue"- haven't encountered a reason to complain yet, after 500 night shots and 200 day shots. THE DOWN SIDE: the EOS software for uploading the photos to computer, and remote controlling the cam via computer is AWFUL. It's a task to upload, as it is beach balling when you hit "upload". Digital professional software is non responsive. I have not been able to use the software past the install point. Mac version here. Better use i-photo and photoshop. I highly rate this camera, and as a videographer who's accustomed to t.v. broadcast quality the REBEL XS is worth it, and since canon is so intent on pushing the rebel XSi they have significantly lowered the price on the XS.....I recommend people buy the XS and get a good lens with the discount earned. The trick is in the lens and the user, and lesser the camera.

Fast Shipping and Awesome Camera

I ordered this camera on a Monday night, with the free shipping it came Thursday afternoon. This is such an awesome upgrade from my 35mm Rebel Ti. Love at first sight, I would recommend this for anyone looking!

Very pleased

Well, I have only had this camera for a few days, but I am very happy with it. The price is very reasonable and affordable. This also is my first SLR having owned several point and shoot film and digital. The only "negative" about this camera is the "Live View". I see this as nothing more than a selling point aimed at point and shoot users. You cannot use the live view in full auto setting, you have to be in one of the manual settings. You cannot use the shutter button for auto focus (read the review on dpreviews.com), I don't want to go into a long explaination here. The view finder is very easy to see and use for taking pics so I probably wont be using live view except maybe to compose a tripod shot, take it out of live view and take the shot. The 18-55mm IS kit lens is really a very good lens and I have no complaints about it (well maybe the plastic mount). Focus is fast and the image stabilizer is great. The 18mm is a very good wide angle although the 55mm is not that great a zoom,I have the 28-135mm USM IS on the way and cain't wait to try it out. As I said I am very pleased with this camera and would recommend it to anyone wanting to make the jump from point and shoot to SLR's.
